In October 2026 we checked the websites of 28 independent Tahoe businesses on both shores: lodges, inns and cabin resorts, restaurants and breweries, outfitters and charters, tree and defensible-space companies, and shops.
- Every lodge sent guests elsewhere to book. Each property we could check used a third-party booking engine, and none showed its rates as plain text an AI answer could quote.
- 4 were blocking ChatGPT and Claude. Two lakeside inns and two defensible-space companies, all through the same platform setting.
- Only 4 of 28 had an llms.txt. The file that tells AI tools what your site covers is still rare at the lake.
- Fire-season services were hardest to find. Tree and defensible-space companies had the thinnest sites: no structured data, no service area, often no license number.
